Seen: “Open Walls Baltimore” Underway

pen Walls Baltimore began last week. The project brings a group of renowned artists from around the globe to Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District. The artists will be painting approximately 21 murals on both occupied and vacant properties.

The neighborhood, which sits north of Baltimore’s Penn Station, has been a long-time concern to the city because of the number of vacant homes and very few nighttime feet on the street. In recent years, the presence of many MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) students, along with efforts by great local businesses such as The Charles Theater, Joe Squared, and The Windup Space, have had a noticeably positive effect.

Hopefully, this beautification project will bring the neighborhood even further, while also achieving the project’s mission statement of: “enlivening public spaces, stimulating community revitalization and national dialogue, and attracting visitors and investors to Station North.”

The lineup of muralists and prominent graffiti artists include: Gaia (organizer) / Mata Ruda / Jessie Unterhalter / Maya Hayuk / Doodles / John van Horne / Overunder / Sten and Lex / John Ahearn / Stecter / Momo / Jaz / Vhils / Ever / Interesni Kazki / Nanook / Chris Stain / Swoon / Jetsonorama / Freddy Sam / Gary Kachadourian

Sponsors include Arts.gov, PNC Bank, Sherwin Williams, Duron, and Sunbelt Rentals.
